the tongue.

Can you roll your tongue?

Can you control your tongue? James takes some time to talk about how important, but how difficult it is to control the tongue. You will definitely hear a sermon sometime in the next year on this subject. I've been wanting to do a series on this for the past year or two - but it just hasn't come together yet. At the end of his comments about the tongue, James makes a statement that is so very convicting to me: Does a fig tree produce olives, or a grapevine produce figs? No, and you can't draw fresh water from a salty spring. What is he saying here? Is he saying that our heart, our motives can be made known by the words we choose to use? I think it was Scooby Doo who said "rhut rho." And I think Jesus said something to the effect of "Out of the overflow of the heart, the mouth speaks." How do you assimilate these verses? What do you take from these instructions from James? And is it ok to quote James, Jesus and Scooby Doo in the same blog entry?

  1. i love how God's word is the same yesterday today and tomorrow. verse 13 says, who is wise and understanding among you? let him show it by his good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. it makes me think of another amazing word in micah 6:8 And what does the Lord require of you? to act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. wow, these three things apply to every thought, deed, action, word we speak and do everyday...and then the definition of wisdom from heaven back in verse 17 of james is something to strive for isnt it? 2. Speaking of wisdom, I forgot to mention back in chapter 1 v. 5-6 how life changing those verses have been for me. I'm about to cry when I think of what I've come out of.... As a young adult, I was so fearful to make ANY decisions (even which cereal to eat for breakfast). When someone taught me how to apply these verses I was set free. ...if I want to know what God wants me to do-ask Him, and He will gladly tell me.... But when I ask Him, be sure that I really expect Him to answer,... That means ask Him and then trust that the thoughts He puts in my mind are from Him. (Matthew 7:9-11)

Cute picture, Matt! Okay, about my tongue.... The Lord is teaching me to be softer and more loving. Please pray for me in that.

And YES, Matt. Any quotes from cartoons are great with me! :)
