At today's small group discussion we talked about our "Church has left the building" possibilities. We reflected upon the scripture of John 13:35 35 "By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another." This scripture is much larger in scope then loving those who are friends and family. It reaches outside the walls of the church. The demonstration of Christ's love is by responding to His love for us by expressing it to the world at large... this is the context of our consideration of how we exercise the Church has left the building! Don't know exactly what we are going to do, but we have a firm grasp of the motivation... I believe that is moving toward contributing and not consuming.

Blessings!GEShttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06715533989429905611noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6464880473988273009.post-45755231775659506302010-04-07T19:27:45.534-07:002010-04-07T19:27:45.534-07:00i am so pumped for this. can't wait to see how...i am so pumped for this. can't wait to see how creative people get with serving. we're bringing serving back. The point being, in looking around the neighborhood we should see where His working is being done. The one very poignant point made by Henry Blackaby in his Experiencing God was that if you want to find out the will of God for your life, go to where His work is being done. Seems to me he was saying that we should look around the neighborhood; find out where God is working and get to it!GEShttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06715533989429905611noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6464880473988273009.post-90151204849779567222010-03-15T21:48:05.080-07:002010-03-15T21:48:05.080-07:00Matt: In a word, what trips me up is humility. T...Matt: In a word, what trips me up is humility. This is the complete opposite of the fallen nature of mankind. We lift ourselves up so that we may progress ahead of our "competition". In Luke 14 (CEV): 10 When you are invited to be a guest, go and sit in the worst place. Then the one who invited you may come and say, “My friend, take a better seat!” You will then be honored in front of all the other guests. 11 If you put yourself above others, you will be put down. But if you humble yourself, you will be honored. What more encouragement to humble oneself is necessary? The story of Jesus is servant leadership. Sacrificial love. Lowering Himself to demonstrate to those he taught that the meek would inherit the earth. Glorious!GEShttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06715533989429905611noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6464880473988273009.post-5038603282107057692010-02-12T07:33:16.126-07:002010-02-12T07:33:16.126-07:00Matt: In reading the assigned scripture for today...Matt: In reading the assigned scripture for today (Matt. 23 and 24), your comments about gifts and the "strings attached" thereto is not unlike the hypocrisy shown by the "teachers" of the day during Christ's time on earth. All of what they did was oriented toward themselves. Their outward actions were ostensibly to 'serve' God and to theoretically provide an example of godliness to His people. When in fact it was all about them. As such when we "love" in the name of Christ, your message of "no strings attached" resonates as it is only the unconditional love of Christ shown to others by us (a gift, if you will) through the power of His Holy Spirit that is truly a gift of God. Likewise, on the receiving end of such love, we need to embrace these acts of love by others (when delivered sincerely and without strings -- i.e. truly a manifestation of Christ in us) with grace and gratefulness, because in fact the love being demonstrated is from Him. Hope you have a blessed day!GEShttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06715533989429905611noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6464880473988273009.post-5993123311493245762010-02-11T07:23:02.168-07:002010-02-11T07:23:02.168-07:00Matt: Thanks for your insight on this passage and...Matt: Thanks for your insight on this passage and the thought provoking challenge. In the midst of the storms of life, I am reminded of the importance of being thankful when I pause to look at photos of my grandsons. The definition of "rich" suddenly takes on a very different meaning. I appreciate this series and as I read during my travels this week the stories of Jesus my strength is renewed as within each story and nuance of the story there is a clear message of the hope, joy and love that He demonstrated. Have a blessed day!
